Gillam Group Inc.
Gillam Group Inc. is a progressive construction management company established with a view to raising the bar in the planning and management of commercial construction projects. Our mission is to provide high quality, customer-oriented construction services, resulting in successful projects and long term business partners. We do this through transparency, teamwork and trust.
Gillam Group’s history evolved from Vanbots Construction, a large general contractor with extensive experience in the ICI (industrial-commercial-institutional) market which was owned by the Gillam family for 18 years until it was sold in 2008. Before Vanbots’ sale the company was achieving annual revenues of roughly $750 million. Vanbots became known as a top-tier construction company renowned for quality, teamwork and excellence particularly on challenging projects. Following the sale of Vanbots, Marcus Gillam started a new company called Gillam Group with key managers from the Vanbots organization which continues to operate according to the same values.
Areas of speciality include construction management design-build and general contracting. Gillam Group devotes considerable care and attention to the pre-construction stage, specifically, estimating, budgeting, cost control, tendering, procurement, permits/approvals and risk management. Our approach has been informed by our deep knowledge of highly risky “P3” projects where risks must be identified, understood and carefully managed prior to starting the work. This expertise means that our people can set-up projects in a professional way, mitigating risks, and paving the way for the construction process to be successful. This skill set is highly effective and crucial for project management and construction management engagements where it is our responsibility to manage our client’s budgets as if we are a virtual extension of the client’s organization.
Gillam Group employs senior project managers, superintendents, coordinators, safety supervisors, estimators, direct labour and head office staff. Our team has the perspective and sophistication of a large builder however we have the flexibility and responsiveness of a smaller organization. Most of our personnel have experience working on major projects and many have received industry awards. Gillam’s staff count is over 75 people and the company’s construction volume is in excess of $200 million.
Gillam Group excels in the delivery of complex projects including challenges such as working in and around occupied facilities, working on live “mission critical” systems, working to fast-track schedules and working on sites which have difficult logistical constraints.
Gillam Group is able to subcontract work to both union and non-union subcontractors, thereby allowing the firm to achieve demonstrable cost savings on its projects. The company has an excellent safety record and it was recognized by the Ontario General Contractors Association in each of the past 4 years for outstanding performance in the area of health and safety. Gillam Group is a member of the Toronto Construction Association, Barrie Construction Association and Ontario General Contractors Association.
Marcus is the president of Gillam Group Inc., a progressive construction management organization based in Toronto, Ontario, that specializes in medium-sized projects in the industrial, commercial, institutional and residential sectors. Gillam Group has a staff of 75 people and is delivering about $200 million in construction contracts.
Marcus developed a foundation in the industry while employed at Vanbots Construction, a business that was owned by his family. There he occupied numerous positions including labourer, estimator, project manager, marketing director and vice president. His experience encompasses leadership roles on many projects in the ICI sector, with some exceeding values of $400 million, under delivery models such as general contracting, construction management, design/build and DBFM. His work has also taken him to markets outside of Toronto including Vancouver BC, Swindon UK and Dubai UAE.
Marcus is a professional engineer (Queens University, Civil Engineering) and holds an MBA from the Rotterdam School of Management. He is the recipient of a Toronto Construction Association “Best of the Best” award and the British Construction Industry Award (BCIA) for innovation in construction.
